Pharmacist held over drugs theft

POLICE have arrested a pharmacist at Mazabuka District Hospital for theft by public servant for allegedly stealing 4 x 500 tins of assorted sealed drugs worth over K320.00.

Southern Province Police Commissioner, Charity Katanga, confirmed the incident yesterday and identified the suspect as Chrispin Halwindi, 33, of House Number Two, Chuundu Township.

Ms Katanga said in an interview that police also arrested Christina Hachoobe, 46, of Nanga Research Institution in Mazabuka in connection with the theft of the same drugs.

She said the stolen drugs were Nalidixic, Amoxicillin, Ethromicine and Metronindazole.

Ms Katanga said the incident happened on Tuesday, last week around 08:00 hours when the two suspects were apprehended at the hospital premise by Sinjala Muhau of House Number 232 Nakambala Township, a security officer at the same hospital.

“We received a report of theft by public servant from Sinjala Muhau of House Number 232 Nakambala Compound in Mazabuka, a security guard at Mazabuka District Hospital who apprehended and brought Mr Halwindi and Ms Hachoobe who were caught with 4 x500 sealed tins of different drugs suspected to have been stolen whose value is K322,” she said.

Ms Katanga said the two were released on police bond on Friday, last week and were expected to appear in Mazabuka Magistrate’s Court today.
