VETERAN journalist, Hicks Sikazwe has urged media practitioners in Zambia to continue improving their professional skills.
Mr Sikazwe said the quality of reporting was low in the country hence the need for journalists to read and get acquainted with the dynamics of journalism.
He was speaking during a World Press Freedom Day luncheon hosted for Ndola based journalists by Times Printpak Zambia Limited at Zanji Lodge.
Mr Sikazwe who is also a media trainer and a former Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) president said journalists should be relevant to their profession by being able to understand and analyse national issues.
He challenged all media institutions including the online media to defend media freedom by being professional.
“All media institutions should follow the tenets of journalism, anyone who owns an online media outlet should defend the Windhoek Declaration by being professional,” he said.
He has since called on Copperbelt based journalists to revive the press clubs which would enable them to preserve the profession.
Speaking at the same function, Times Printpak (Z) Limited Deputy Managing Director Chishimba Chishimba said the revival of the press clubs would enable journalists to interact  at a professional level.
Mr Chishimba has since urged media practitioners to read widely and be conversant with the changes in the country.
The luncheon was attended by media practitioners from the Times of Zambia, Zambia Daily Mail, Muvi TV, The Post, and Radio Chimwemwe.
This year’s World Press Freedom Day was being celebrated under the theme “Media and Gender equality in Digital Age.”
