By JAMES KUNDA –
MMD president Nevers Mumba says the party is still a force to reckon with in Eastern Province despite the defection of Dora Siliya to the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Ms Siliya, a former MMD spokesperson and Petauke Central Member of Parliament (MP), defected to the PF where she has filed to re-contest her seat on the ruling party’s ticket.
Dr Mumba said in an interview yesterday that the defection of Ms Siliya was not a determining factor of the party’s position in the region.
“Dora is not the determining factor of the party’s popularity in any part of the country particularly Eastern Province. Her defection was purely out of personal choice and it is not anything that could
paralyse the party,” he said.
Dr Mumba said the MMD provincial committee in Eastern Province had since commenced the process of identifying a suitable candidate to re-contest the Petauke Central seat.
“The committee in the constituency is sitting to identify how the party will proceed and the structures will ensure that the right person is identified to represent the party,” he said.
Dr Mumba said the MMD was not owned by an individual and its members had the free will to support or leave the party.
