GOVERNMENT is in the process of redistributing the fleet of vehicles currently concentrated in Lusaka, in a bid to address the transport problems encountered by various departments in rural districts.
Chief Government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili said the problem of transport being experienced by Government departments in rural districts will soon be a thing of the past.
Mr Kambwili, who is Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, said President Edgar Lungu had already issued a directive to the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communication to redistribute Government vehicles.
He said this in Kasempa when he called on acting District Commissioner Mercy Kambita, who informed the minister that all the Government departments with the exception of two, did not have a single functioning vehicle.
Ms Kambita said this was making it difficult for the departments to implement Government programmes effectively and efficiently.
But Mr Kambwili assured that the Government had taken a step to redistribute the vehicles, a move that would see more vehicles concentrated in Lusaka, being deployed to rural districts.
“Government is aware of challenges such as lack of transport that you are facing here and it’s not just here but every rural area,” Mr Kambwili said.
He said at present, the number of Government vehicles in the country is more than 5, 300 which is far beyond the 1, 600 vehicles required to run the entire Government including in rural districts.
This is in line with Government’s policy to enhance service delivery to people particularly in rural areas.
Mr Kambwili said it is Government’s desire to address the imbalance in terms of development between the rural and urban areas.
“Why should there be a mismatch in terms of development between rural and the urban? This Government wants to see rural and urban areas enjoy the same facilities,” Mr Chishimba said.
He challenged civil servants to be committed to Government’s cause of improving service delivery to the people.
It is a privilege for them as civil servants, to serve in their respective positions and therefore morally correct for them to do the right thing.
