high courtBy KASONDE KASONDE –

A TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for four years with hard labour for beating his friend to death using a stick.
Isaac Sachingwebe was sentenced by Kabwe High Court Judge Elita Mwikisa in a case of manslaughter involving Joseph Kadisanzwana on July 29, 2012 in Mumbwa of Central Province.
Sachingwebe admitted to the charge of manslaughter following a quarrel on the fateful day.
Sachingwebe hit the deceased on the head and the rib area until he bled and was rushed to Kawama Hospital.
Mr Kadisanzwana was then referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka where he died.
A postmortem was conducted which indicated that he died from brain damage resulting from the beating.
The matter was reported to the Police station and investigations were carried out which led to the arrest of Sachingwebe who was charged with murder but was later reduced to manslaughter.
In mitigation he pleaded with the court to be lenient as he was a first offender who was married with two children and looking after his siblings.
Ms Justice Mwikisa sentenced him to four years imprisonment with hard labour to run from the day he was arrested.
She cautioned Sachingwebe not to engage in violence but resolve issues in a sober manner whenever provoked.
She said that Sachingwebe as a young man should have been using his energy and time for productive means such as in agriculture, instead of using to assault other people.
