KAWAMBWA District Council has won the first prize for the 2015 local government excellence awards.
The council also received a photocopier machine during the 4th local governance awards for excellence ceremony hosted at Zambia Air Force (ZAF) banquet hall in Livingstone on Thursday night.
Several delegates, who attended the just ended 59th Local Government of Zambia (LGAZ) at Chrismar Hotel in Livingstone, attended the awards ceremony.
Kitwe City Council came second and received a generator set while Livingstone City Council came third and received a desktop computer.
Addressing delegates during the ceremony, LGAZ vice-president for the Southern Region Billiard Makwembo thanked councils across the country for participating in the awards.
Mr Makwembo said the entries for this year had increased to 11 from seven for last year.
“The awards are designed to motivate councils to design, implement, adopt innovative ideas, projects and practices aimed at serving the community in an effective and sustainable way.
“They are also aimed at improving the capacity of councils to deliver quality and efficient services,” he said.
Mr Makwembo said the local governance awards for excellence and accompanying assessment process would motivate councils to attain greater success in service delivery and good governance.
