A SUSPECTED mentally ill man of Livingstone has hacked to death two people and injured two others using a hoe under unknown circumstances.

Shale Hanyinde Stongani, 24, of Siankalumba Village in Chief Mukuni’s area in Livingstone hacked to death Maxwell Chimamu, 50, of the same area on Saturday.

Mr Stongani also hacked another resident, Ernest Phiri, 34, who later died at Livingstone General Hospital.

Southern Province Police chief Charity Katanga confirmed this in an interview yesterday.

Ms Katanga said Mr Stongani, who is suspected to be mentally ill, was detained at Libuyu Police Station.

“A murder case occurred on January 25, 2014 at about 20:00 hours at Siankalumba Village of Chief Mukuni in Livingstone District in which Maxwell Chimamu, 50, was hacked to death using a hoe by Shale Hanyinde Stongani, 24, who is suspected to be mentally ill.

“Mr Stongani further hacked three other people namely Ernest Phiri, 34,  Gray Munsanje Muzwanga, 42, and Thomas Mutambo, 27, all of the same address, but Mr Phiri later died at Livingstone General Hospital where the three were admitted,” Ms Katanga said.

She said Mr Muzwanga and Mr Mutambo were still nursing wounds at the hospital.
Livingstone General Hospital medical superintendent Namani Monze said he could not comment on the condition of the two patients as he was in Lusaka.
