ZescoBy CHUSA SICHONE –
THE announcement of ZESCO as winner of the award for the Best interpretation of this year’s 89th Agricultural and Commercial Show’s theme sparked murmurs and laughter among the audience yesterday.
ZESCO has become infamous in the country for its load-shedding programme following the low water levels in the Kariba Dam.
This year’s Agricultural and Commercial Show’s theme is ‘Innovation Beyond the Golden Jubilee’.
Malawian President Peter Mutharika and Agricultural and Commercial Show Society of Zambia (ACSZ) president Murray Anderson presented the award to ZESCO and others during the official opening of the annual event in Lusaka yesterday.
Eastern Province was a double prize winner after scooping first prize as best national productivity and best in national efficiency awards respectively, both falling under the agriculture category.
The National Pensions Scheme Authority (NAPSA) scooped the best overall exhibit award.
Also in the commercial category in which ZESCO was, Zambia Sugar PLC got the best export in Zambia, while the best international exhibit award went to ZIMTRADE.
Zambeef scooped the award for the best overall in fat Stock, Mbesuma Breeding Centre got the best overall in breeding centres prize while Blessington Farms won the best overall pig farm award.
Speaking after the award presentation ceremony, Mr Anderson said Zambia was a very proud productive and diverse agricultural country.
Mr Anderson said the ACSZ,  a non-profit and self-financing, cooperative was in the final stages of building a new and fully service members pavilion as the old one was being demolished and works were expected to start soon after the show.
He said also that the ACSZ in its Master Plan was intending to construct a world class arena which would be able to provide entertainment throughout the year for the two million Lusaka residents.
Mr Anderson said further that the Society had plans to establish an international standard exhibition hall where trade, industrial and commercial shows could be held for commercial and industrial exhibitors and groundbreaking for the project was expected to be done next year.
This year’s Show has attracted exhibitors from Germany, Israel, Pakistan, China, India, United States of America, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Nigeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Angola, Egypt, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, Brazil and Malawi besides Zambia.
