EVERYTIME there are rumours of job losses or shutdowns in the mining sector, an atmosphere of despair is created.
This is because the mining sector contributes massively to employment creation and the economy of the country.
The assurance coming from the Konkola Copper Mines (KCM), that its operations are intact and the  retention of staff is laudable and marks a firm brake on the ephemeral apprehension created by some overzealous agents.
This assurance has come at a time when the Government and KCM are focusing on further improvement of the welfare of the mines as one of the key sectors of the economy, whose responsibility also extends to ensuring job security.
As KCM Manager for Public Relations and Communication, Shapi Shacinda clarified, the mining giant has not made any decision to close down operations at Nchanga Underground Mine and Nkana Refinery, we salute the KCM management for coming out timely to stem the prank which has the potential to cause unnecessary agitation and panic.
Furthermore, that the company made it clear that no one will be laid off or have their contract terminated is a big relief.
Instead, KCM is in consultation with the Copperbelt Energy Corporations (CEC) and the Government on the implications of load-shedding.
We, like other progressive thinking members of society, salute KCM for handling the load-shedding situation with sobriety instead of rushing into making decisions that may be injurious to a significant portion of society and foment agitation in the nation, yet the Government is counting on the cooperation of everyone to turn around the economy and boost the wellbeing of the Zambian citizenry.
This is a true reflection of patriotism and investment partnership that denotes a symbiotic relationship where both parties benefit.
We are also encouraged to hear from KCM that the implications of load-shedding are not clear, that’s why a decision has been made to engage the Government and CEC so that correct remedial measures are taken without shedding of labour and operations.
It is, therefore, folly for some people to act irresponsibly to orthodoxically   circulate news of operation shutdowns and employment cuts.
It is also laudable that KCM has shamed prophets of doom by stating clearly that the company places employees’ welfare and livelihoods on the top priority list. This is what the Government has always encouraged.
WE stand with KCM on this milestone decision which, in all, parameters is, plausible.
