THE Road Development Agency (RDA) has awarded Sable Construction and China Civil Engineering Corporation a contract of tarring Chama-Lundazi Road under the Link Zambia 8,000 project.
Sable Construction has been given more than 70 kilometres of the work while the Chinese contractor will tar the remaining portion of the road.
Eastern Province Minister Malozo Sichone said this when he paid a courtesy call on Senior Chief Magodi of the Ngoni people of Lundazi District at his palace on Tuesday this week.
Mr Sichone was accompanied by deputy Permanent Secretary Patrick Mwanawasa, provincial Police Chief Eugene Sibote and acting Lundazi District Commissioner Mukule Banda.
He said the Government was keen to improve the living standards of the people in the province through an improved road network.
Mr Sichone assured Chief Magodi that some of the feeder roads in his chiefdom would be worked on by the Government.
He said President Edgar Lungu directed him to visit his palace and hear the challenges he was facing.
He advised the traditional leader and his subjects to support the Government of the day as it was fostering national development.
Mr Sichone also cautioned another Chinese contractor, China Jiangxi, against poor workmanship in the construction of a boarding school in Chasefu.
He said after inspecting the structure that he was not happy that cracks were developing in the unfinished building which had gobbled K44 million.
Chief Magodi said he was happy that President Lungu increased the floor price of maize from K70 to K 75 for a 50 kilogramme bag of maize.
Chief Magodi appealed to Zesco to connect his palace to electricity supply under the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) programme of electrifying the chief’s palaces.
He also appealed to Government to rehabilitate nine dams and sink boreholes as part of providing safe drinking water to his people.
