Sport On - Chipepo newIT will indeed be embarrassing if the Chipolopolo lose to Kenya during this Sunday’s must-win Gabon 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Group E qualifier away in Nairobi.
The Chipolopolo have recently struggled to qualify for the AFCON finals and the visit by Republican President Edgar Lungu yesterday was timely ahead of such an important outing against no pushovers – Kenya.
Let us hope the players got the much needed motivation, after the President’s visit, to go all out and pick up the first win of the campaign.
Zambia needs a win to start stamping authority in the group after that dismal 0-0 draw against Guinea Bissau and get the campaign bad on track.
Fans do not want to see a repeat of the 2015 AFCON qualifiers struggle but want the Chipolopolo to get back to its old self and start winning and qualifying early without needing any mathematics.
Football is one of the well sponsored sports discipline in the country but results of late leave a lot to be desired. There is serious need to work on the problem that has seen teams qualify for major competitions but yet fail to go past group stages.
The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has continued to receive goodwill from the corporate world owing to the power football has.
But that kind of support should be reciprocated with good results and the signing of the US$5million five year deal with SuperSport should help spar Zambian football to greater heights.
Zambia must become a shining example across the continent through its football and less of hooliganism by fans of clubs who refuse to accept defeat.
Thus the onus will be on clubs to raise their tempo and see how best they can help improve the standards of the game as that will greatly reflect on how the Chipolopolo play.
Wishing the Chipolopolo and the Zambian athletes at the All Africa Games and Commonwealth Youth Games all the best of luck as they aim for glory, remember to interact on eliaschipepo@gmail.com or elias.chipepo@times.co.zm.
