By SHAMAOMA MUSONDA –
ZAMBIA yesterday faired badly at the ongoing Africa States Bowls Championships in Lusaka after both the men and women teams were beaten by regional powerhouse, South Africa.
The women, who are anchoring Zambia’s hopes for a podium finish at this tournament, were first to fall to the might of the South Africans in both the singles and rinks categories at the Central Sports Club.
At Lusaka Club, the Zambian men could not offer any serious resistance as they were whacked in the pairs and triples by the South Africans.
In the women’s singles, Rhoda Namposya lost 8-21 while the fours (rinks) team put up a spirited fight strongly before eventually succumbing to a 17-21 loss.
Other results in the women’s category saw a contrast of results for Botswana who after beating Zimbabwe 18-10 in the rinks, went on to lose to the same opponents 14-21 in the singles.
It was the same case for Kenya who first lost 7-21 to Namibia in the singles but avenged that in the rinks where they won 24-17.
For the men, the Zambian team was first blown away in the pairs where Alec Barclay and Chris Kapata lost 11-16 before the triples team got battered 9-16.
In other results for the men, Namibia edged Malawi 16-13 while Kenya took Botswana to the cleaners with a 20-7 beating while Zimbabwe were on bye in the triples.
Next up for Zambia is Namibia for both the men and women.
