THE Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) says it will ensure that sports facilities across the country are properly managed.
And Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili said after touring some sports facilities in Chipata on Tuesday, that the SCZ will be entrusted with the responsibility of running all sports facilities in the country as a way of curbing vandalism.
Kambwili expressed disappointment that most of the sports facilities in the country were in a deplorable state.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, SCZ general secretary Mann Muchimba said the minister’s call had come at the right time as he put the responsibility of looking after sporting facilities on the sports mother body.
Muchimba said SCZ will take stock of all sports facilities across the country and ensure that they are well managed.
“As the SCZ, we are very happy that the minister has come out to emphasise the need for us to run sports facilities. To that effect, we will strengthen our structures and make sure that all sports infrastructures are run properly,” he said.
Muchimba said the SCZ had therefore put in place an infrastructure committee that will be headed by board member Joseph Silwamba to chat the forward.
“There is already a committee that we have put in place to take stock of the facilities and map the way forward otherwise, we are delighted that the Government has amplified SCZ’s responsibility to oversee sports facilities,” he added.
And National Olympics Committee (NOC) president Miriam Moyo said the Government’s move was welcome as it would help in guarding sports infrastructure from vandalism, adding that with necessary logistics in place, the SCZ would deliver.
