Kansanshi Mine assistant general manager Meiring Burger said the mining company was proud to engage with local school communities by way of contributions that would improve the level of education.
Speaking at the hand-over ceremony of two classroom blocks and the play grounds at Kikombe Primary School yesterday, Mr Burger said the company spent $40,000 for the building of the structures and a further $6,000 on learning resources.
At the same function, district education board secretary, Evans Kamwana said it was encouraging that corporate organisations such as Kansanshi Mine were contributing to the development of education in the district.
He said his office appreciated the facilities that Kansanshi Mine has provided for Kikombe Primary School and other institutions in Solwezi as the gesture helped in the improvement of levels of education. “We are here to receive these facilities which we appreciate because they will definitely make a difference in the standard of learning. With these facilities in place, children will always look forward to going to school and in the process, the quality of education will improve,” Mr Kamwana said.
School head teacher Felix Wakyembe said the contributions made to the local schools in Solwezi were paying off. He said the facilities presented by Kansanshi Mine would make it possible for early childhood education to be meaningful.
He said Kansanshi Mine, as their cooperating partners, had made huge efforts of implementing the early childhood education policy and appealed to Government to support the sector relating to finances, learning and teaching materials and deployment of maids in order to ensure that early childhood education flourished.
Mr Wakyembe assured Kansanshi Mine management that the school management would guard the infrastructure jealously by providing security.
Kansanshi Foundation early childhood education and development trainer, Samantha Mirza said she was excited that the facilities had been handed over to Kikombe Primary School. She said the facilities would help children make positive changes in children’s school work. -SUMA SYETEMS
