LUSAKA residents on Mungwi Road yesterday looted a truck which was carrying crates of beer, after it swerved and spilled half of its contents.
The truck, belonging to Red Sea Distributors, an agent of the Zambian Breweries, lost control when the driver tried to avoid hitting into a bus and, in the process, dropping more than half of the crates of beer it was carrying.
Zambia Police Sergeant Louis Silume, who was at the scene, said the truck was coming from Emmasdale area and was headed for Chawama Township where it was going to distribute the alcohol.
Mr Silume said the truck, registration number ABJ 3566 and trailer number ABP 8412T, lost control as the driver swerved to avoid hitting the bus.
“The truck driver was trying to swerve so as to prevent the truck from hitting the bus and then spilled the crates,” he said.
Meanwhile, the driver Gift Nasilele, 30, said the accident happened when he was trying to avoid colliding with the bus, which was picking up passengers on the road side.
“I was in the middle lane and there was a bus on the outer lane which people where boarding and in front was a Corolla which was in my lane and in the process of avoiding hitting the bus, the crates fell off,” he said.
The truck, which loads about 882 crates of beer, lost about 490 in the incident.
