By CHATULA KANGALI –
THE Government has urged farmers in the country to be weather smart when growing crops to avoid losses.
Agriculture Deputy Minister Maxus  Ng’onga  said in an interview that there was need  for  farmers  to   be weather conscious  and  ensure that they  grow a required  variety of  seed crop in their particular area.
He said the country was experiencing different rainfall patterns and that farmers should know the variety of seed favourable to their respective areas.
“Like for Copperbelt, a long and a medium maturing seed of maize will be favourable because of the early rains, Southern Province, an early maturing seed is ideal because of the dry conditions the province experiences,” he said.
Mr N’gonga said that a number of farmers in the last season lost crops due to the change of the rainfall patterns.
The deputy minister said that seed companies in the country had developed different varieties of seed and that farmers should know what kind seed was favourable to  their particular areas.
Mr Ng’onga said Government through the Red Locust Control Board had put all measures in place to curb pests like army worms that invaded the country two years ago.
He said the board was working on ensuring that army worms do not invade and destroy any crop once again in the country.
