Police in Chipata in Eastern Province have arrested an officer at the Ministry of Community Development for allegedly stealing 65×50 kilogramme bags of maize meant for vulnerable people.
The officer is alleged to have stolen the maize which is under the Food Security Pack (FSP) programme.
The FSP programme is in the ministry in which he operates.
The officer has been arrested together with two taxi drivers for stealing maize and reselling it in Malawi on Friday last week.
Eastern Province deputy Police commissioner Patrick Phiri said Godfrey Lombe, 32, a community development officer in Chipata, has been charged with theft by servant while Christopher Chipasha, 29, and Timothy Zimba, 30, both taxi drivers have been charged for theft.
They are alleged to have smuggled maize, property of the Government, into Malawi on Friday around 18:00 hours.
Mr Phiri said the incident happened at Feni Sub-centre, a few kilometres from Malawi.
The three were remanded at Chipata Central Police Station awaiting court appearance.
