By SAMUEL LUKHANDA –
THE Handball Association of Zambia (HAZ) preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations Handball Championships in Egypt are in disarray as the local association struggles to find more than K500,000.
The HAZ needs K515,000 to send the men’s national team to the continental championships to be held in Cairo.
The African championships run from January 20-31 with the team already training for the tournament.
Along the championships, the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB) has lined up training programmes for technical and administrative personnel in order to improve their skills.
HAZ communications manager Josab Changa admitted his association was in a tight position because of the unavailability of finances for the trip.
“We have been training well and the morale is high among the players but money is the biggest constraint as we are struggling to raise the budgeted K515,000.
“The association has approached companies as well as the Sports Council of Zambia (SCZ) to help us out. We hope they come through because if the trip is aborted, it will demoralise the players who have put in a lot of hard work,” Changa said.
He appealed to the Government and the corporate world to come to the aid of the cash-stricken association.
