THE quality of water supply to Ndola, Masaiti and Luanshya is set to improve once Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company (KWSC) completes construction of a US$430 million dam in Mpongwe District.
The project, which is expected to start early next year, will be funded by the Government through the Bank of China.
KWSC managing director, Athanasius Mwaba told journalists in Mpongwe yesterday that the project would create 3,000 jobs.
He said this when Copperbelt Permanent Secretary Howard Sikwela inspected the site earmarked for construction of the dam.
Mr Mwaba said once the construction works were completed, quality water would be supplied to  the three districts.
He said currently, the three districts were being supplied with water that was recycled, adding that the completion of the project would help improve the quality of the commodity supplied to consumers.
“The project that has been funded by Government will commence next year in March. It will create more than 3,000 jobs. This is a multi-purpose project that will help us improve on water quality and supply,” he said.
He said the people who would be displaced during construction of the dam would be compensated.
Mr Mwaba, however, did not disclose how many people would be affected as the number would be determined after the Environmental Impact Assessment was done.
He also said that KWSC would consider putting up a water treatment plant in Mpongwe to effectively service the people in the area.
Reverend Sikwela said he was impressed that the water utility company would start building the dam next year as directed by President Edgar Lungu.
He said the project should be supported by everyone as it would create jobs.
Rev Sikwela said quality and clean water was cardinal to the health of the people.
