A POLICE officer believed to have been drunk while on duty and fired a teargas canister at Chimwemwe Police Post in Kitwe has remained in detention as investigations against him are still on.
Copperbelt Police chief, Joyce Kasosa said yesterday that Constable Mwamba, who on Sunday fired a teargas canister during an argument with a complainant, had not yet been charged.
This is because investigations to determine whether or not he acted out of the influence of alcohol were still being conducted.
Ms Kasosa said the Police wanted to first establish whether or not the officer was drunk before appropriate action could be taken against him.
She said Kitwe Central Hospital on Sunday had no reagents for conducting tests for alcohol levels in blood.
“The test is expected to be done today (yesterday) and so the case is still under investigations,” she said.
Constable Mwamba caused confusion when he fired a teargas canister during a quarrel with a complainant who had gone to report a matter.
Some angry residents of Chimwemwe Township stormed the Police post and manhandled the constable before they handed him over to his counterparts at Mindolo Police Station where he was detained.
