By MILDRED KATONGO –
THE EVANGELICAL Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ) has urged members not to allow politicians to use church buildings as campaign platforms ahead of the August 11 tripartite elections.
EFZ executive director, Pukuta Mwanza advised that the Church should instead pray for peace before, during and after elections.
Reverend Mwanza said the Church should not be seen to be giving politicians a platform to sell their campaign messages.
He said in an interview that the church played an important role in counseling and praying to ensure that there was no political violence during elections.
“Let the churches come out in the open and strongly condemn campaigns in churches. Politicians should not use the Church as a platform to campaign. The Church is purely spiritual, where the word of God is preached, it should not be mixed with politics,” he said.
Reverend Mwanza said people had the right to choose the candidate they wanted to vote for, saying that the decision should not come from the messages by politicians on the pulpit in churches.
He said the Church was there to give spiritual guidance and healing and not to be turned into a campaign ground.
Reverend Mwanza said as Zambia goes to the polls, churches should strongly condemn and not allow politicians to campaign or distribute campaign materials within their premises.
Reverend Mwanza appealed to pastors and Church leaders not to drift away from their intended purpose of preaching the word of God.
