THE Disaster Management and Mitigating Unit (DMMU) has continued carrying out damage assessments in various townships of Lusaka that were recently hit with heavy rain, causing some houses and other structures to collapse.
Lusaka District Commissioner Davies Mulenga said the DMMU was still assessing the extent of damage to property with a view to distributing relief supplies.
Mr Mulenga said the district had compiled reports, and the DMMU was on the ground assessing the situation in George, Kanyama, Chunga and John Laing townships.
Captain Mulenga said a number of residents were left homeless while others had their property destroyed since the onset of the rain.
“The DMMU is still carrying out assessments following reports of houses that were damaged after heavy rains that were recorded recently,” Capt Mulenga said.
He called on the residents who live near sewer dams to vacate such locations as they were prone to flooding.
“The residents of such areas should find alternative accommodation to avoid being inconvenienced every rainy season,” he said.
“I want to take this opportunity to advise the residents who live near Chunga to move from the area which is flood-prone and a health hazard due to sewer water.”
He urged the residents to ensure their houses were in good shape to avoid incidents during the rainy season that could be fatal at times.
