NKANA striker Ronald ‘Sate Sate’ Kampamba has been shortlisted for the 2013 MTN-FAZ Premier League Footballer-of-the-Year award alongside Zesco United midfielder Kondwani Mtonga and Red Arrows captain, Bronson Chama.
The winner will be announced during the much-delayed awards to be held at Moba Hotel in Kitwe on Wednesday next week.
The three players had a successful 2013 season which saw them play a vital role in Zambia winning the COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup and also getting a bronze at the CECAFA Senior Challenge apart from their good showing at their respective clubs.
Kampamba finished top scorer with 18 goals in the league with Chama guiding Arrows to a Barclays Cup triumph while Mtonga was instrumental in Zesco getting the CAF Confederation Cup place.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) communications and media manager, Erick Mwanza announced this at a media briefing held at Football House in Lusaka yesterday. “At the same Gala, we shall also award several other deserving sportsmen and officials like young player of the year, most disciplined and coach of the year among others.
The delay has been because we were waiting for the sponsor (MTN) to come through,” he said. Mwanza said Kitwe was picked to host the awards to avoid the two Nkana players and coach who are in the running for various awards not to be stressed ahead of their 2014 CAF Champions League return match against Mbabane Swallows.
Kampamba will not need competition in picking up the Golden Boot after his 18 goals in the 2013 season were unassailable while Julius Situmbeko of Power Dynamos and Red Arrows’ Shaderick Malambo, who both had an impressive season, will each be running for two awards where they will face-off in both.
First up will be the Most Disciplined Player award where the two talented youngsters will be joined by Nkana veteran defender Billy Mwanza for the accolade.
Situmbeko and Malambo will then battle for the Young-Player-of-the-Year award but the two players will now need to deal with another Arrows youngster and favourite for the award in Bruce Musakanya, who is on loan at Nkana. Nkana’s Masautso Mwale is hot favourite to take the Coach-of-the-Year award as he faces competition from Tenant Chembo of Zesco United and Nchanga Ranger’s Fighton Simukonda.
Gladys Lengwe of Kitwe is in the running to retain the Referee-of-the-Year award and faces challenge from Wisdom Chewe of Kabwe while the Lusaka trio of Stanley Hachiwa, Moses Mwale and Romeo Kasengele are up for the Best Assistant Referee award along with Kabwe Chansa of Kalulushi.
