By RONALD CHAWE –

THE Zambia Tennis Association (ZTA) has so far raised US$ 1,100 towards settlement of the outstanding fees it owes to the African Mother body, the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT).

The money has come from within the association’s officials, players and former player’s pockets with the initiative coming after the association failed to pay the first instalment as agreed upon last year.

The association was expected to pay the first instalment to CAT by the end of January this year which it failed.

In an interview in Kitwe yesterday, ZTA president Francis Musonda said the officials and players came up with the initiative, after the association struggled to pay last month.

“We came up with an initiative that officials, players and former players should pay something from their pockets and the initiative has worked well so far. We have reached half-way, that’s to say we have raised about US$ 1,100,” Musonda said.

Musonda said once the association pays something, it is going to engage CAT to mediate in talks between his association and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) it owes huge sums of money.

Zambia has been missing out on the international front due to the failure by the association to settle the affiliation fees.

During the meeting which was held at Golden Peacock Hotel in Lusaka last year, the association agreed to start paying affiliation fees in instalments in January this year.

Musonda said even the association’s efforts to engage the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) has not yielded anything leading to officials and players to take it upon themselves to pay.

ZTA owes CAT US$2,250 in unsettled affiliation fees stretching back three years, a move which prompted the continental mother body to suspend Zambia from participating in all international tournaments for six years now.

He has since commended all the members who contributed towards the initiative and has urged more members and the cooperate world to come on board in helping tennis in the country.
