By MILDRED KATONGO –
THE National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) will install seven new toll gates at selected gazetted toll points across the core road networks using the cost effective ‘Booth and Boom’ technology by June this year.
This will be in addition to the two commissioned toll sites at Manyumbi, between Kabwe and Kapiri Mposhi, and Kafulafuta, between Kapiri Mposhi and Ndola, which have been in operation since January 15, this year.
NRFA chief executive officer Anthony Mwanaumo unveiled the Agency’s roll out plan for the implementation of phase II of the national road tolling programme when he paid a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Permanent Secretary, Howard Sikwela, recently.
This was according to a statement issued by NRFA spokesperson Alphonsius Hamachila.
Dr Mwanaumo said NRFA would ensure equitable installation, generation and application of the toll revenue across the 10 provinces in Zambia.
He named the upcoming toll sites as Chongwe, between Chongwe and Rufunsa; Choma, 20 Kilometers from Choma town; Mumbwa, between Mwembeshi and Mumbwa; Levy Mwanawasa Bridge in Chembe, Mansa; Dag Hammarskjoeld on the Ndola-Kitwe dual carriageway, one toll site on Solwezi-Mutanda Road and another one on Kasama-Mbala Road.
“NRFA will install seven more toll gates at selected toll points. This is in addition to the two that have already been installed. Road tolling is law in Zambia.
“I would like to extend the Agency’s appreciation to the driving public for their overwhelming support in raising revenue for road maintenance,” he said.
Dr Mwanaumo said NRFA was in the process of implementing additional features that would enhance efficiency and accountability, and provide a conducive operating environment for the tolling mechanism.
He said a cashless payment solution in order to reduce cash handling at the toll sites would be put in place alongside surveillance cameras, a number plate recognition system and other features for the local user discounts for residents who stay in the vicinity of the toll plazas.
Reverend Sikwela commended the NRFA team for their efficiency during toll collections at both Manyumbi and Kafulafuta.
He called on all Government officials in the province to support the tolling mechanism.
He said the Government was constructing roads across the country at a huge cost, adding that the road assets needed a regime of sustainable maintenance which the toll facility would guarantee.
