A UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) leader at the Intercity Bus Terminus in Lusaka has been detained for his alleged involvement in political violence.
Innocent Kalimanshi was by press time yesterday in police custody for questioning over the burning of the Patriotic Front (PF) offices in Matero Constituency.
Lusaka Province Police chief Nelson Phiri said that Kalimanshi was picked up yesterday in the morning.
Mr Phiri said the accused had not yet been charged, but was being questioned over his alleged involvement in cases of assault.
“I can confirm that we picked up Innocent Kalimanshi today for questioning at Lusaka Central Police,” Mr Phiri said.
He said the suspect had been on the police wanted-list for the offence of malicious damage to the property for several weeks.
Kalimanshi was picked up at the magistrates’ court in Lusaka when he appeared for another offence.
Police assistant public relations officer Esther Katongo also confirmed Kalimanshi’s detention.
Ms Katongo said Kalimanshi was suspected to have spearheaded the burning of the PF Constituency office in Matero last month.
Kalimanshi was initially PF vice-chairperson for the Intercity Bus Terminus branch before he was expelled from the party for terrorising people at the station.
He then defected to the UPND.
Some UPND cadres yesterday went to the Lusaka Central Police Station demanding for his release.
