MORE than 400 members of the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) in North-Western Province have defected to the Patriotic Front (PF).
PF North-Western Province chairperson Emmanuel Chihili said in an interview that the defectors were from Ikelengi, Zambezi and Chavuma districts of the province.
Mr Chihili said the PF had been receiving overwhelming support from the grassroots, which was evident from the number of defectors being received from opposition parties in the province.
“We have overwhelming support and it is evident from the fact that so many people from the opposition parties are defecting to the PF.
“We had 113 UPND members defecting to our party in Ikelengi, who included ward officials. In Zambezi, we received about 70 defectors while in Chavuma there were 300 that joined us,” Mr Chihili said.
He said it was unfortunate that some UPND members had allegedly resorted to inciting violence, and the PF had opted to advise its members not to retaliate whenever provoked.
“Our friends know that the PF has gained ground in the province and have started provoking innocent people that have come to support the PF, but we have told our members to refrain and not to retaliate when provoked.
“It is disappointing that instead of conducting issue-based campaigns they are trying to mislead people to an extent of telling them that if they vote ‘yes’ in the referendum, it means they will allow same-sex marriages,” he said.
