THE Rotary Club of Nkwazi has sent four Zambian children to India for specialist heart treatment in an effort to help decongest the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) which has been treating a number of children suffering from heart complications.
The total number of children to be flown to India is 90, which is a target to be achieved by the end of this year.
The children aged between three and six, have been going in groups of four and eight.
Club president-elect Godfrey Mwanza who saw  off the four children who were accompanied by their mothers on Tuesday at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport said the club was there to assist the needy,
Mr Mwanza said his club had partnered with the UTH to ensure that the patients were screened and those with heart problems that needed treatment abroad were shortlisted.
“We have partnered with UTH and we screened patients with special heart problems that they were looking for,” he said.
He also said surgeries to be done in India were meant to heal the patients permanently.
Mr Mwanza said Escort Hospital in Delhi, the institution where the children were seeking medical attention from was reliable because it was specialised in treating heart ailments and had dedicated medical staff and equipment.
He further revealed that the process of evacuating patients with heart ailments abroad will continue as long as well-wishers continue to provide funding.
Last week on Saturday, the Rotary Club of Nkwazi held an induction dinner at Mulungushi International Conference Centre where Mr Mwanza was ushered in as the 31st president succeeding  Beatrice Mwila who handed over the instruments of power.
The Nkwazi rotarians pledged to serve humanity so as to make the world a better place to live in.
