Police Cap 628x350By KASONDE KASONDE –
THREE people have been apprehended in connection with a video that has gone viral showing a woman being inhumanly treated and assaulted.
Police deputy spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said officers were still pursuing the man who assaulted the woman by way of kicking her.
Meanwhile, the women movement has bemoaned the high levels of gender-based violence (GBV) that has been recorded in the country recently.
Women and Law in Southern Africa (WLSA) chairperson Priscilla Chileshe made the remarks in Lusaka yesterday at a joint Press briefing with Zambia Centre for Communication Programme and World Vision Zambia.
Ms Chileshe said the recent video of a Kafue woman being sexually abused was traumatising and a sign of moral degradation in the country.
Ms Chileshe said the intensity of the violence and the impunity with which the violence was committed was shocking.
“The recent case of a video depicting a woman being physically and sexually assaulted by a group of men in Kafue is shocking. The lack of remorse among onlookers was barbaric and a sign of moral degradation,” Ms Chileshe said.
She said violence had ripple effects and could affect both those who were survivors of it and those watching.
Non-Governmental Organisations Coordinating Council board member Sarah Longwe called on the Zambia Information and Communication Technology Authority (ZICTA) to use the information submitted by phone users to trace people who sent such offensive videos.
Ms Longwe said ZICTA should work hand-in-hand with the police to track down unscrupulous people who circulated offensive videos on social media.
