GOVERNMENT says it will start the issuance of Biometric National Registration Cards (NRCs) in August.
Home Affairs Permanent Secretary Chileshe Mulenga said the issuance of Biometric NRCs was supposed to start last month, but that the programme was pushed forward owing to the August 11, 2016 general elections.
Dr Mulenga said the pilot project to be conducted after the elections would cover Lusaka, Chongwe, Kafue and Luangwa districts, before being rolled out to other parts of the country.
“We shall commence after the elections, that’s when we will begin the pilot phase of the Biometric NRCs,” he said.
In 2013, Government disclosed that it was in the process of introducing Biometric Cards with security chips which would be compliant with the electoral system.
The Biometric NRCs would be embedded with a security chip containing data of the holder and its biometric features would make it difficult for the identity card to be forged as is the case with the current cards.
About US$6 million from Government and cooperating partners has been budgeted for the implementation of the project.
The Biometric NRCs were expected to be introduced in the country in June, 2013.
