By JULIUS PHIRI –
MTN Zambia has committed K56,000 towards the hosting of today’s Kulamba traditional ceremony of the Chewa speaking people of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
MTN Chief Sales and Distribution Officer Amon Jere said when he presented a cheque to the Kulamba traditional ceremony organising committee  at Protea Hotel in Chipata yesterday that,  Kulamba was a big ceremony that needed to be publicised effectively.
He said MTN Zambia was committed to the preservation of culture and ensure that the sponsorship was aligned to the mission to make the customers’ lives brighter.
He said over the last 11 years of operating in Zambia, MTN has been involved in the preservation of the country’s heritage through support to traditional ceremonies.
He said the MTN support to Zambian culture was a deliberate initiative and formed part of the corporate social investment programme.
Mr Jere said MTN believed that Eastern Province had great potential to contribute significantly to the national Gross Domestic Product  (GDP).
He said over the past few years, the province has seen an influx of investments thereby creating a basis for further development.
There was need, however, for more infrastructure investments especially in the areas of transport and communication. Mr Jere said the completed as well as the ongoing road works on the Great East Road and other inter and intra district roads in the province,  would greatly improve trade in the region.
He said MTN Zambia was complementing through the rolling out more sites in the province as well as other parts of the country to provide communication solutions that supported sustainable development.
And Chewa Heritage Foundation Zambia Chapter (CHEFO-ZC) chairperson James Chirwa said the Chewa people were happy with sponsorship of the traditional ceremony by MTN Zambia.
Mr Chirwa said the organising committee was looking forward to continued support from the corporate world such as MTN. The Kulamba is being held today in Katete and President-elect Edgar Lungu is expected to grace the occasion.
