By JAMES KUNDA –
A WOMAN in Lusaka has escaped death after allegedly attempting to commit suicide following her arrest for ‘kidnapping’ two girls aged seven and eight years.
Tasha Chama, 34, of Ng’ombe Township, while in custody, allegedly swallowed pieces of a broken bottle in an attempt to commit suicide, but police officers rushed her to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital where her life was saved.
Chama was on Saturday reported to the police by Ades Banda, who told the law-enforcement agents that her two children had been kidnapped by way of being lured into an unidentified motor vehicle by a strange woman.
Ms Banda alleged that the vehicle went to an unknown destination.
This is according to a statement released yesterday by police spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga.
Mr Hamoonga said the police launched investigations into the matter and around 14:00 hours on Saturday, Chama was apprehended and the girls were retrieved from the vehicle.
The girls have since been reunited with the family.
“After putting her in custody, she swallowed some pieces of a broken bottle in an attempt to commit suicide, but quick action by the police of rushing her to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital saved her life.
“She was later discharged from hospital in the afternoon and detained at Ng’ombe police. She will appear in court soon,” Mr Hamoonga said.
