A FERTILISER manufacturing plant is set to be constructed in Kabwe, Central Province.
Kabwe Town Clerk Ronald Daka said the plant would be set up in the industrial area and would create further employment for the local people and revive economic activity in the district.
Mr Daka said in an interview that the move was aimed at lowering the price of fertiliser and creating jobs among the youth in the district.
Mr Daka expected the agriculture sector to improve, adding that the area was favourable for farming because of fertile land in many parts of the district.
He said the local authority had made progress and was currently working in conjunction with a company to ensure the project was accomplished.
Mr Daka said time was ripe for Kabwe to have a multi-facility economic zone, and that the manufacturing of fertiliser was one of the programmes which had been long overdue.
“We now want to focus on developing our town and we want to have different industries here in Kabwe, knowing better that our top priority is the creation of employment.
“We want youths to also have employment out of a multi-facility economic zone which will be put in the industrial area with a fertiliser plant as the first project,” he said.
Mr Daka said the plant would not only lower fertiliser costs in the district, but enhance development.
The putting up of the fertiliser plant in Kabwe would boost revenue collection by the council and lead to increased supply of the fertiliser commodity in the country.
“Otherwise, this will eventually bring about the lowering of fertiliser prices in the country due to competition just like cement did after Dangote started supplying,” he said.
