THE Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has urged accountants to render practical and innovative solutions to address various challenges affecting society.
Head of ACCA Zambia Mukaba Mukaba said accountants should exhibit professionalism and excellence in their work as well as ensure to carry out their corporate and national duties effectively irrespective of the sectors they represent, whether public or private.
He was speaking in Livingstone on Friday during the close of a joint annual business conference hosted by ACCA, Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Mr Mukaba said society would always turn to accountants for solutions to critical challenges such as corruption and abuse of public resources.
“At a time when many questions about good governance, responsible leadership and accountability are being raised, accountants must rise to the occasion to offer practical and innovative solutions to challenges affecting society.
“Here in Zambia, accountants, like their counterparts namely, lawyers as well as engineers and other professionals should endeavour to maintain their independence, impartiality, objectivity and integrity at a critical time when society needs professionals to stand up to defend their cause,” Mr Mukaba said.
ACCA network panel chairperson Mike Musonda said accountants played a key role in governance and decision-making as providers of sound information to business and society, particularly on financial matters.
Mr Musonda said there was need for accountants to work closely with other stakeholders to enhance good governance.
“In our quest to lead Zambia from an emerging market to a first world class, there must be concerted efforts to ensure that sound governance practices are implemented,” he said.
ZICA president Wesley Beene urged accountants to be catalysts of change locally and abroad.
Mr Beene, who was the guest of honour during the gala night, urged delegates to implement the various presentations made at the conference.
