THE National Ex-miners and Allied Workers Association (NEAWA) is in the process of incorporating a special purpose commercial entity to tap into the economic potential of the Copperbelt.
NEAWA president Taulo Chewe said the company, which would be called Ex-miners Resources Limited, would be engaged in various business ventures.
“We want to tap into the economic potential of the Copperbelt, we can’t continue mourning over the job losses but we need to step up efforts to create jobs. That is the reason we are forming a company,” Mr Chewe said.
He said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that using the pool of knowledge from its members, the company would be soliciting for contracting jobs in the mines as well as the massive infrastructure development being undertaken in the province.
Among the infrastructure projects being developed by the Government and cooperating partners in the province are the construction of Ndola Airport, which will cost of US$397 million, the C400 and the Kafubu Water and Sewerage Company water project.
Other projects are the $200 million Nkana Water and Sewerage Company project, as well as the construction of Chagwa Mall in Kitwe being funded by the National Pension Scheme Authority at a cost of $50 million.
Last year, President-elect Edgar Lungu directed that all the projects should be undertaken with the involvement of Copperbelt-based firms.
Mr Chewe said the company wanted to take advantage of the directive to gain more from the development projects being undertaken on the Copperbelt and create the much needed job opportunities.
