By CHILA NAMAIKO –
PATRIOTIC Front (PF) chairperson for elections Jean Kapata has ruled out the possibility of the ruling party forming a coalition Government with the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND).
Ms Kapata, who is Mandevu member of Parliament (MP)-elect and former Tourism and Arts minister, said UPND president Hakainde Hichilema was pushing to meet President-elect Edgar Lungu to, among other matters, negotiate for a coalition Government.
But UPND secretary general Stephen Katuka recently dismissed such claims, saying his party had no intentions of forming a coalition Government with the PF.
Mr Katuka clarified that Mr Hichilema recently wrote to President Lungu in the interest of safeguarding national peace and security after the post-election violence witnessed in some parts of the country, and not forming a coalition Government.
Ms Kapata, however, said in Choma when she addressed party members at Leons Lodge on Friday that the UPND was pushing for a coalition with the ruling party.
She said the PF could not enter into a coalition Government with the UPND because the two parties had different agendas and ideologies.
“I want to assure PF members in Choma and Southern Province at large that our party is growing stronger and will not even form a coalition Government with UPND. What you hear about a coalition Government are merely speculations from some people,” Ms Kapata said.
She praised the party members in the province for their continued support to Mr Lungu’s leadership and urged them not to be intimidated by those from the opposition.
The votes the local people gave the PF in the August 11 general elections, she said, were important in making Mr Lungu emerge victorious.
She called on the local people to remain peaceful and desist from being used by some politicians to engage in violence.
President-elect Lungu, she said, would remain committed to delivering more tangible development to benefit citizens in all parts of the country.
PF Choma District chairperson Kebby Mbewe said the party was intact and would remain firm in supporting the development agenda of Mr Lungu.
Miriam Mbewe, a resident who was among many victims of political violence in Choma, hailed the PF for donating foodstuff to them.
