THE Lusaka High Court has jailed a 41-year-old man to five years imprisonment with hard labour for causing the death of his 37 year old pregnant girlfriend.
High Court Judge Mwape Bowa in his judgment expressed worry at the upswing cases of Gender Based Violence (GBV) related cases.
The convict Albert Chongo of Bauleni Township was facing a charge of murder but was reduced to manslaughter after he pleaded not guilty to having caused the death of Bertha Musoni on January 3, this year follwoing a domestic quarrel.
Judge Bowa said cases of such nature were taking centre stage and it was the duty of the court to step in and put an end to this scourge by imposing deterrent sentences.
He said the convict had engaged himself into a physical confrontation with his companion and inflicted injuries which led to her death.
“Men should learn to simply walk away when confronted or feel they can’t contain their anger, there is no justification for continued physical assault on weaker sex companions.
“I now impose a five years jail sentence with hard labour although your offence carries life imprisonment,” Judge Bowa said.
The duo differed on the material day and the convict in the process stumbled on his girlfriend who collapsed and was rushed to University Teaching Hospital ( UTH) where she was pronounced dead.
