THE Government has with immediate effect changed Zambia Nation Service (ZNS) officers manning check points to curb smuggling of mealie meal and maize from the border town of Chililabombwe.
A new team of ZNS officers has since been deployed.
Speaking in an interview yesterday, Chililabombwe district commissioner Paul Mulenga disclosed that a new team had taken over to help curb smuggling at the border post and other areas of concern adding that there was some improvement following the deployment of new officers.
“A new team of ZNS personnel has been deployed in the district to curb smuggling and since there coming we are seeing some improvements because people have been apprehended,” he said.
Mr Mulenga said the replacement of officer was long overdue because the level of smuggling at the border with Congo DR was alarming and was denying the country the much needed revenue.
He said Government would continue replacing security personnel as a preventive measure.
He said there was need to bring sanity to the Copperbelt by tackling various issues among them the smuggling of commodities to neighbouring countries.
