CHAMPIONS Zanaco may next season be without half the starting team that help win the MTN-FAZ league title with midfielder Salulani Phiri the latest to leave.
Phiri has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with South African premier side Polokwane City.
Zanaco chairperson Edward Mutale yesterday confirmed the development in an interview and that Phiri’s move was finalised between the two clubs and the player will join the Premier Soccer League side this January.
Already, Zanaco has lost Roderick Kabwe to Ajax Cape Town, also of South Africa with striker Fashion Sakala also telling the bankers he will be heading to the same Ajax Cape Town in two weeks’ time.
Kabwe and Sakala were Zanaco’s joint top scorers with 10 goals each.
International defender Fackson Kapumbu is reportedly in talks with Zesco United and so is forward Dave Daka.
Phiri has been instrumental in Zanaco’s title winning run and was a main feature for the Chipolopolo at the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament in Rwanda early this year.
He was also key to Zanaco’s run especially in the first-half of the MTN-FAZ Super Division before a three-month injury absence kept him out in the second half.
Mutale also added that Phiri’s contract will also be performance based at the South African side.
The Zanaco chairman also confirmed that striker Charles Zulu is still a Zanaco player but will be attending trials in Switzerland in January next year .
Asked on how midfielder Rodrick Kabwe’s move to Ajax has affected the side, Mutale said Kabwe was a key player but that the club has moved on to finding his replacement.
He confirmed that the club is set to hold trials for five Ghanaian players who are expected in the country first week of January.
“We want to reinforce the team ahead of continental games; some players have left, so we need new ones also to replace them. We can not dwell on the past,” Mutale said.
He also confirmed that the team will be in one shape by the time they play their first continental game in February next year.
The Numba Mumamba-coached side were drawn against Rwandese giants APR.
And Zesco United’s midfielder Misheck Chaila has completed his move to Tanzanian league champions Young Africans football club (Yanga) coached by George Lwandamina.
Zesco confirmed on their facebook page that Chaila’s movement was done in a player swap deal for the Ugandan international winger Hassan Kizito who is expected to join the Ndola side in February after attending to national team duties.
Meanwhile, division one side Lusaka Dynamos have signed Congolese defender Anthony Anawula on a two-year loan deal.
Anawula first attended trials at Zanaco with the player failing to satisfy certain requirements at the bankers and later on joined the Elijah Chikwanda demoted side.
