POLICE and the fire brigade in Mansa are searching for the body of a man who drowned in Mansa Riveon Sunday morning.
It is not certain whether the man, identified as Malaya Chongo, aged 39, committed suicide or fell into the river accidentally.
Luapula Province Police Commisioner Hudson Namachila said Chongo, of Lukakula Village in Chief Kalasalukangaba of Mansa, fell into the river at a foot bridge that had been washed away by heavy rain.
“A man drowned in Mansa River on his way home from a drinking spree at a place called Panama in Mansa. The incident happened around 11:00 hours on Sunday and we are currently searching for the body in the river,” he said.
Mr Namachila urged members of the public in Mansa to avoid crossing bridges as they were not stable due to heavy rain.
