EUROPEAN coaches have dominated the number of applicants who have applied for the vacant head coaching job at Zesco United.
Zesco advertised the job of the head coach following George Lwandamina’s departure for a lucrative deal in Tanzania with Young Africans, commonly known as Yanga.
The club has received 65 applications in total with the majority of them coming from Europe.
From the 65, only five are Zambians while other Africans are from Cameroun, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
The club has also received applications from France, Switzerland, Belgium, Spain, Britain, Serbia, Portugal, Italy, Sweden, Romania and Greece in Europe.
Zesco media officer Katebe Chengo confirmed this in an interview yesterday.
“As you know, the deadline for applications was yesterday (Monday). At the close of the day, we had 65 applications. A committee will sit to scrutinise the applications and then we will shortlist the ones we will interview in the course of the week.
“Most of them are from Europe, we have more Europeans than Africans.
Unfortunately I cannot mention any names at this stage. You will be able to know when we shortlist who to interview,” Katebe said.
However, unconfirmed reports reveal that former Chipolopolo assistant coach Irfan Kawri and former Zamalek and Gor Mahia coach Frank Nutall are among the coaches who have applied for the job.
Nutall confirmed his application with soka25 stating that Zesco already has his credentials.
Zesco reached the CAF Champions’ League semi finals for the first time last year and have set their priorities high this year in the second tier of CAF competition, the Confederation Cup as well as wrestle the league title back from Zanaco.
The club is searching for a top quality coach that will surpass what Lwandamina achieved last year.
According to an advert placed in the media, Zesco are looking for a coach with five-year’ experience at a top club or a national team who has qualifications a Grade-12 certificate or equivalent, should poses a UEFA Pro, UEFA A, UEFA B, CAF A or B Licences with previous honours won an added advantage.
