By CHUSA SICHONE –
THE National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has paid  US$1.2 million to AVIC International for the construction of ultra-modern toll plazas in Shimabala, Chisamba, Mumbwa and Chongwe.
NRFA public relations manager Alphonsius Hamachila, who confirmed the development, said construction of the Shimabala, Chisamba and Mumbwa toll plazas was expected to be completed in two months’ time except for the one in Chongwe because of land acquisition issues.
Responding to a Press query, Mr Hamachila however, said yesterday that the land issues in Chongwe had since been resolved.TOLL-FEE-624x365
“The toll plazas will be installed with vehicle recognition features and customer fare unit displays, among others. User acceptance tests will commence end of February in readiness for the commissioning of the toll plazas during the first week of March, 2017,” he said.
Mr Hamachila said the Agency was in the process of introducing cashless payment systems for tolls such as toll cards to reduce handling of cash and enhance road user satisfaction.
The NRFA has engaged the business community to identify distributers of road tolls, toll cards, electronic tolls and E-Tags.
