By SARAH MWANZA –
FIRST Lady Esther Lungu has called for concerted efforts in the fight against childhood cancer.
Ms Lungu bemoaned the fact that in developing countries like Zambia, the cure rate of childhood cancer never exceeds 35 per cent.
The First Lady said this yesterday in Lusaka at the commemoration of the International Childhood Cancer Day which fell on February 15.
She said that according to the National Cancer Registry report for 2013, the overall mortality of childhood cancers from tumours from 2008 to 2010 was 45 per cent.
“This mortality rate is very high and there is need for our Government to reduce these deaths,” Ms Lungu said.
The first lady said every child had the right to a dignified healthy life regardless of their health status.
Ms Lungu called on members of the public to show love and care to children who were currently facing healthy challenges.
She further pledged to continue working with several other stakeholders in the country to help raise awareness of childhood cancer.
“A collective effort in the fight against childhood cancer is vital as it could help save thousands of children,” she said.
At the same event, Minister of Health Chitalu Chilufya said the Government was committed to the fight against cancer in the country.
Dr Chilufya said the Government had invested massively in the phase two of the Cancer Diseases Hospital, which included an inpatient facility with a 262 bed capacity.
