POLICE in Mkushi District in Central Province have arrested a 28-year-old woman for burning her four-year-old son’s palms on a hot brazier for helping himself to some beans.
Alice Kayula of Kawama Township is said to have roasted her child’s palms on a red-hot brazier on Friday last week after learning that he had eaten beans which was meant for the evening meal.
Central Province Police Chief Lombe Kamukoshi who confirmed the incident yesterday said the young boy suffered severe burns on his right palm and was currently admitted to Mkushi District Hospital.
Ms Kamukoshi said the matter was reported to the police by the victim’s grandmother before the officers arrested Ms Kayula.
“Brief facts were that, on the material date the victim was reported to have eaten cooked beans reserved for supper as relish and the mother became annoyed which resulted in the beating of the boy.
“But in the process, she burnt him by forcing the child to hold a burning brazier to which he sustained burns on the palms, the victim is hospitalised while the mother has been arrested,” she said.
Meanwhile, the six people that were burnt to death in Chibombo district on Tuesday last week have been buried with the help of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU).
Chibombo district commissioner Barnabas Musopelo said the mother Given Namwala, 55 and her five children between the ages of three to 14 were buried on Friday last week.
He said the police officers were still investigating the cause of the fire and no one had been arrested so far.
“There is also the challenge with transport for the police officers, so it has not been easy. There are so far two speculations; some people say it was suspicion of witchcraft but others are saying the man was a
womaniser, so it’s very difficult,” he said.
The Five children died after the house they were sleeping in at Chishinga Village in Chief Chitanda was petrol-bombed by unknown people. The mother lost her life as she tried to rescue the kids.
