GOLIATH Racing Team driver Miles Monge set pace after winning the Zambia Motor Sport Association (ZMSA) season opening Madmax national rally championship held at the Graham Rae Farm in Chisamba.
The rally that started with 17 cars could only see nine make it to the finish line with the other eight crashing out.
Monge, who started the rally on a low note with a ninth place finish in the qualifying stage, turned the tables around in the main race to finish top of the ladder, ahead of national champion Muna Singh Junior who finished second.
The burly looking driver was a darling of the crowd as he raced the fastest in all the eight categories including the tricky Penyaonse Mixa clocking overall one hour, 20 minutes and 23 seconds as Muna Junior trailed two minutes off.
Acid Boyz Racing Team drivers and brothers Leroy and Kleeven Gomes took third and fourth places with times of one hour 28 minutes and one second and one hour thirty-one minutes and thirty-seven seconds respectively.
Haminder Singh was fifth on one hour thirty-four minutes and 40 seconds leaving veteran driver Azim Ticklay in sixth position after finishing six minutes later.
New entrant Farook Sidique came out eighth, while Muhammed Ally Rashid ended ninth to complete the cars that passed the chequered flag.
It was a sad story for Geoffrey Chulu, who after starting well, crashed out in the sixth round while Mayur Patel’s car almost caught fire but was aided by the marshals in the fourth stage.
Speaking after being crowned winner, Monge said it was his first win of a national rally and promised to keep the pace throughout the season so that he could win the national championship title at the end of the season.
“This is my first victory and the feeling inside is good. We had problems late last year, the rally wasn’t going well, so we set focus on this year. My navigator and I have been working out to get fit. Our car went through preparations and it has paid off, we have got a perfect car for the whole year,” Minge said.
Madmax marketing manager Nyambe Maboshe said the company was proud to be the sponsors of the first rally and was committed to sponsoring other sports outside motorsport.
“The first rally is always a Madmax, it is always good to set a pace of the rallies, we would like to sponsor more sports,” he said.
