By HELEN ZULU –
THE Zambia Association of Women in Construction (ZAWIC) has invested about K300, 000 in procuring pavers and block making machine to enhance their construction works.
ZAWIC chairperson Topsy Mwewa said the K300, 000 used to purchase the machine was part of the K700, 000 loan which was given to the association by the Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).
Ms Mwewa said the association had ordered the machine from China which was expected in the country by the end of this month.
She  said in an interview in Kasama, Northern Province that  women in construction were ready to start full production of the pavers and blocks once the machine  arrives  in the  country.
“We got a loan worth K700 000 from CEEC, we are buying a machine at a cost of about K200, 000 to K300 000, while the remaining amount will be used as a starting capital.
“We will buy aggregates for starting and for the recruitment of workers, once the machine comes in, we will start the works. We have already ordered the machine from China,” Ms Mwewa said.
She said the association was facing a challenge in getting the contracts because they were competing with men a situation which she described as unfortunate.
Ms Mwewa said the women had the capacity to do good quality work as they had been trained in various construction related works.
She called on Government to consider them in the coming construction projects it was implementing saying awarding contracts to them would motivate them to participate more in infrastructure development across the country.
“We are urging Government to consider giving  us some contracts because we have the capacity, we have gone through different trainings we can build, we can make roads, we can lay pavers we can survey we have a lot of experience.
“The active participation of women in contributing to the country’s growth is a step towards achieving gender equality and women empowerment,” Ms Mwewa said.
