By FRANCINA PHIRI –
A COUPLE of Kalasa Village in Mwansabombwe District has been struck to death by lightning which left their four-month-old baby with severe burns.
Mwansabombwe District Assistant Officer John Mwasha said the weekend tragedy occurred during an evening downpour that was accompanied by much thunder and lightning.
Mr Mwasha said the couple, named as Jackson Lyando, aged 33, and Lister Kaoma, 25, were in their home when the bolt struck, killing them instantly.
“Despite the four-month-old baby surviving, she was badly burnt by lightning,” he said.
He named the baby as Jackson Lukwesa of Chief Kazembe’s area in Mwansabombwe, who is now in the care of a grandmother.
Mr Mwasha said the bodies of the deceased were in the Lyamfwa District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial.
Even though the rainy season has not properly set in, this is the second such incident reported in less than a month from the province after a family of five was recently killed after lightning set ablaze their grass-thatched home as they slept.
