ZACA calls for dialogue among mobile phone providers

THE Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) says the competition issue among mobile phone service providers should be addressed promptly as it is the best form of protection for consumers.
ZACA executive secretary Muyunda Ililonga, said this in an interview recently when asked about the proposed delinkage of Cell Z from Zamtel by the Zambia Competition Commission (ZCC).
Mr Ililonga said Zamtel was the national carrier of telecommunication services and this created unfair competition for other mobile phone service providers who did not have the same privilege.
He said there was need for Cell Z to compete on equal terms.
“Competition on equal terms will mean lower costs and charges on consumers with the introduction of more consumer benefits,” he said.
He said it would also attract extra consumer facilities and cheaper services.
Fair competition he said, improved products and lowered costs and that consumer welfare was more pronounced.
He however, said this could prove to be difficult if some players had unfair advantage over others.
