Private sector challenged to promote economic growth

By Business Reporter
GOVERNMENT has called on the private sector to participate in the Implementation of policies to help Zambia develop and have positive economic growth.

Speaking at the official launch of the Barclays Bank Zambia Plc Junior Achievement International Partnership, Commerce Minister Dipak Patel said there was need for the private sector to work closely with the Government in developmental issues that affected Zambians.

“We need to work together to Implement our polices and ensure that Zambia attains developmental changes as Government cannot do it alone without the participation of the private sector,’’ Mr Patel said.

He said for this to be attained, there was need to first examine the barriers that affected the private sector.

He was however happy with the stand taken by the Ministry of Finance on the issue of treasury bills as the banking sector was operating without the interference of the Government, as was the case in Namibia.

He said if the banking sector failed to operate under the regulations of the Ministry of Finance it should expect Government to take action and be in control of the Treasury Bills.

He stressed that it was vital for matters like the Implementation of the new Investment Act and the Export Processing Zones to have the full support of the private sector for the country to have positive growth.
