Firm calls for Internet law

MICROLINK, an internet service provider (ISP) has called on the Communications Authority (CA) to introduce a law that will address the internet interference caused by non-restriction on use in frequencies.
Speaking in an interview at a cocktail party for its clients at Lusaka’s Pamodzi Hotel recently, Microlink executive director John Taylor said Zambia currently had no law that restricted ISPs to use only one particular frequency which reduces interference.
He said the interference comes in when the ISPs’ share the same frequency which causes disruption in internet service provision.
Mr Taylor said the only solution currently for ISPs was changing frequencies to avoid the problem. He, however, said his company was enjoying a good relationship with the CA.
Meanwhile, Microlink says plans are underway to expand services to Chisamba, Chingola and Ndola.
Mr Taylor said it was the dream of his firm to expand throughout the country and later to the region.
“Our dream at Microlink is to offer the best services and go to all parts of Africa as a Zambian company,” he said.
He said though internet was spreading to other parts of Zambia, rural areas would still have to face dial-up connections or use small dishes. Dial-up connection can be placed where phonelines exist.
